History
South Georgia College Librarians (SGCL) held its first meeting in 1966. SGCL later changed its name to South Georgia Academic Librarians. SGAL is now called South Georgia Associated Libraries.
The primary purpose of the group was to foster inter-library cooperation. In carrying out its purpose SGAL:
-
Developed an audio visual collection catalog for distribution;
-
Founded SGAL serials holdings list which later became GULS which became Georgia Online Library Data (GOLD);
-
Negotiated discount purchase agreements with various vendors;
-
Secured federal funding for joint projects;
-
Provided various training opportunities that evolved into staff development workshops;
-
Cooperative efforts have changed since 1966, but SGAL remains committed to its basic principles.
